Our Curriculum

 Curriculum Topics

The curriculum for Little Stars through Discovery is divided into topics called "Trails". Youth earn emblems, or patches, based on these five trails.

The Trail to Knowing Me revolves around activities promoting self-knowledge, communication and relationship. The Trail to Family and Community focuses on leadership skills, service-learning, exposure to different cultures and citizenship. The Trail to Creativity introduces youth to imagination-inspiring activities and the arts; the Trail to the Future concentrates on the Environment promotes involvement in camping, understanding of the weather and nature.

Educational & Outcome Rich

Camp Fire curriculum is based on the McRel educational standards (similar to Oklahoma P.A.S.S. standards). Each curriculum book lists the standards and benchmarks provided in the text. The curriculum is also outcome-based using the 40 Developmental Assets outlined by The Search Institute. The Search Institute says, "Developmental Assets are concrete, positive experiences and qualities that are essential to raising successful young people." Thirty six of the forty assets are entwined in the Camp Fire curriculum not by doing anything special but just by following the curriculum how it’s written.

 Leader Help

Leaders can purchase curriculum books from the Tulsa Camp Fire Office. These books are divided into the Trails described above then into meeting plans. Youth in Little Stars through Adventure complete three meeting plans in one topic to earn an emblem for that trail. Discovery must complete four meeting plans. The curriculum details the purpose, youth outcomes, educational standards, materials needed (usually common items found around the house), preparation, specific activities and reflection activities for each meeting plan. Example openings, closings and activities youth can do at home are also provided.

Older Youth

Youth in Discovery and Horizon also have the opportunity to earn Torch Bearers. These are emblems that focus on one topic that allow the older youth

member to decide and plan out their own activities based on their own interest. Youth develop a plan, carry it out and then reflect and celebrate on their accomplishments.

The Wohelo Award

Horizon is the oldest club level in Camp Fire for youth in 9th through 12th grade. These youth members qualify to earn the Wohelo Award, the highest achievement a youth member in Camp Fire can earn. To earn the Wohelo Award, youth must complete the following:

  • Complete four Reflections, emblems that take about a year to earn, called "Choices and Decisions", “Celebrate Me",  "Mapping My Way" and "Making It On My Own"
  • Learn about the history of Camp Fire USA both nationally and locally
  • Complete 200 hours of service in three advocacy issues in the community. For each issue, youth must lead, teach, serve and speak out.
